Irish buttermilk soda bread , so simple indeed! You need this in your life or kitchen at least!

This really is the best recipe for this so simple bread.. And oh my gladness.. It’s simple indeed..

170 white flour

170 brown flour

Teaspoon of salt

Teaspoon of baking soda

Carton ( about 290ml) of buttermilk

That’s it! Nothing else or the heritage cops will be straight after you.. Adding fruit or peel changes the story..

I think buttermilk gets a hard time, as it has the word butter in it people think it’s bad.. It’s actually very good for you! Of course in a limited way yet I strongly believe that out of the milky world this is the bestest..

So get everything into a bowl.. It’s funny yet I struggle with getting icky fingers! So breathe deep and get on with it.. I do!

And mix with fingers and knead just a little.. It will all stick together and feel quite smooth..

 That really is it!

No proving punching covering etc etc etc..

I repeated the above three times as had buttermilk to use up.. Yeah we have that kinda house!

Three loaves there .. Slashed at least a third of the way down and dusted with flour..

Into the hot oven.. 200 degrees real money ..

For thirty minutes..

Taken out to cool..

Cut and eaten spankin fresh with a salted butter..

One loaf given as a gift to a pal down the road..  One for us.. Umm and probably one more for us also!

As we don’t really eat bread this is a great bread that is so easily digested..

Lovely doodle dandy..

  1. I made this morning your delicious bread. I made two, one with the mix of white flour and brown flour and the second one only with white flour. The texture is superb. Our lunch for today. I posted the picture on my Instagram page. Have a good day and thank you! 🙂

  4. You’re so right about buttermilk – it’s a great ingredient for breads or pancakes. It tastes lovely on its own, too, btw …

  6. One of these days I am going to make this bread. I think buttermilk adds some great flavor to dishes and when I see this ingredient in a recipe I know it’s going to be good. Thanks for coming to Angie’s party 🙂
